Pollution - The White Rider
"The horseman on the white horse was clad in showy and barbarous attire. While his horse continued galloping, he was bending his bow in order to spread pestilence abroad. At his back swung the brass quiver filled with poisoned arrows, containing the germs of all diseases". Pollution is the modern day plague, conquest, or pestilence. Pollution as a horseman represents the destruction of our world due humanity's carelessness with the environment. Pollution is unobtrusive, works in the background.
 War - The Red Rider
"A red horse went out; and to him who sat on it, it was granted to take peace from the earth, and that men would slay one another; and a great sword was given to him" Sometimes related to the Great Roman Emperor, Commodus, whose cruel reign was followed by 92 years of turbulence and turmoil within the Roman Empire where 32 emperors and 27 pretenders hurled each other from the throne through incessant warfare. War is here to bring discord into the world and chaos to those vying for peace.
 Famine - The Black Rider
"And then will come Famine, riding on a black steed. He will ride into the land of plenty. And great will be the horseman's hunger for he is hunger. His hunger will seep out and poison the air" Wherever there is anything in excess and wherever the gluttonous and depraved thrive, famine finds its way in to starve the soul. For both the beautiful and the poor, it's a way of life. For the rich and indulgent, the enemy.
 Death - The Pale Rider
"I looked, and behold, an ashen horse; and he who sat on it had the name Death; and Hades was following with him. Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by the wild beasts of the earth." Death is the ultimate and oldest being. There is no escaping death, for even the immortal have entangled with his work and crossed paths. He is the leader of the horsemen, ruler over the reapers, and has been at the corners of the universe since before earth's creation. He doesn't take sides and even God has no authority over him.
